The long history of horses and men
The horse has been domesticated by humans for millennia. Its use spread throughout Eurasia from the earliest antiquity. The traces of a small animal, ancestor of the horse goes back 60 million years in North America. The ancestor of the current horses and ponies is the Equus caballus, an ancestor of horses that appeared less than a million years ago on the continent of Europe. The Equus Caballus will then migrate to the Americas via Africa. Its evolution gave birth to the zebra and the donkey. The species disappeared from the American continent about 8,000 years ago. Although almost all horses are now domestic, the Przewalski horse is considered the last true wild horse, and many domestic horses are returning to the wild.
Different uses of the horse
For centuries, horses have been at the service of human beings who choose different breeds for traction, agriculture, war or saddle. The horses allow the expansion of trade and the expansion of civilizations over large expanses. During the colonization of the Americas, the species are reintroduced on this continent. It is considered "the noblest conquest of man" and it is, of all animals, that which has most marked the history and progress of mankind. Professions are linked to its maintenance, its trade and to sports, horse and equestrian activities. The two main uses of the horse are either to be a mount for a rider or to be an animal used to pull loads. Thus came the distinction between the saddle horse and the draft horse.
The horse riding
In most developed countries, the horse is now mounted for leisure or sport. It can be a therapy partner, and tends to get closer to the pet. Most domestic horses are trained for riding or traction between 2 and 4 years. There are several equestrian disciplines on horseback:
- The TREC (Practical natural obstacle like tree trunks of great slopes, orienteering etc.)
- Dressage (a discipline that learns, to direct its horse, to make it advance with its impulse). Dressage makes it possible to make many figures of arena, such as serpentines, diagonals etc ...
- Jumping (and Jumping Competition) allows to jump horses oxers, trunk of trees etc ...
There are, however, many others.
